Brazilian President Lula's First 100 Days
Lula inherited high deforestation in his first government, much higher than it is now. Deforestation was reduced by 70% over the course of Lula's eight years in office. The problem is that there is not a lot of political support in those regions for actions to bring down deforestation back down again. Inflation is an issue, although at present, inflation is actually lower in Brazil on an annual basis than it is in the United States.
