We know that with repetition of information, there's something called the illusory truth effect. A critical function of memory is more has to do with the future than the past. We have a memory well suited to allowing us to use past experience to run simulations of events that might occur in the future. Because our memory is very flexible we can take bits and pieces of different experiences and re combine them into novel representations.
