How to Date a Settlement

Archaeologists have to work with multiple layers of occupation, building and use at sites. It's common for different people to build on already established sites in Europe or the Near East. In Italy you will get a village built on top of an old villa from the Roman period into the early medieval period. So if you look underneath some current Italian villages, there are still ancient settlements under them.
