Vali: We like to frame the civil war as a really grand, exhausting narrative. And i think it's important to frae it as the entire country recovering for many reasons. In 18 65, somewhere around a hundred 80 thousand black americans are serving in the union army. This is unprecedented in world history of formerly enslaved people taking up arms on behalf of a government that enslaved. I this tis one of those events in history which feel like, it feels fake,. Like someone wrote it a the president's assassin is present for his last speech, and then actually declares his intention to assassinate the president.
