The high point of inequality in the US was 1929, according to Walter Shydell. Consumer durables are a way for people who are not the rich to own the same things that the rich people were owning. So it's like we have this wide inequality, but we're going to pretend that in a sense we don't because you too can own the samethings that are being owned by the rich and famous.
