The Hindu right wing at the time also bubbled up from socialism. The Sadhus are supposed to be past any kind of, you know, material attachment. Gulzaril Adnanda was a trade unionist who then sort of taught economics for a bit in Bombay. He is an extremely devout Hindu and a believer in many spiritual causes.
