There are something like two million distinct shades of color that we can, in principle, identify as human beings. But no language has two million words for colors. It would take effort and cognitive effort to be that precise without any gain in functionality. So it kind of makes sense that language is doing well enough without do better. And i think it's also worth emphasizing that the color spectrum that we can perceive is alsoa ther massive number of orders away from what’s actually out there.
