The Politics of Social Security
So long as social security remains on the cusp, oh my god, it's going to go bankrupt in a few years, it's a problem. Politicians have an incentive to keep the system teetering on the edge so that I can use it again the next election cycle. It is the single biggest line item in the federal budget. If you cut every penny of defense spending, all of it to zero, you wouldn't balance the budget.
