The key thing that happens is that you have new machines and software that can do new kinds of things that nobody could do before. And there's a sense in which people say this new thing that we can do, maybe it could do everything. That's been a consistent perception all through this period. What are the commonalities that you see across these periods of time? I guess now it's dollars going into the sector. There's doomerism as well.What do you see as kind of the commonalities?

Robin Hanson is an associate professor of economics at George Mason. He is known for a number of his works including Prediction Markets and Futarchy, writings on the possibility of alien life with both the Great Filter and Grabby Aliens, his book The Elephant In The Brain about our social programming, as well as extensive work and thought in the field of artificial intelligence including a very prescient series of debates and writings with Eliezer Yudkowsky 15 years ago.
