Dante's Treatment of Saladin
Dante imagined that Saladin was installed in the outer reaches of hell. He rubbed shoulders with Homer and Socrates and Plato and Aristotle who also lived and died before Jesus Christ. The west tried to work out why God had allowed this to happen what it allowed to happen so Christians had to try and work out why they were losing crusades after being victorious for a few years. It's not their fault these were good men they would have been Christians if they had the opportunity, says Oliver.
