The Trend in Average Body Weight Among Female C57bl/6j Mice
The average age-adjusted weight of females C57BL-6J mice has been decreasing by 0.06 grams per year and that of male mice by 0.08 grams per year, which was not significantly different from zero. This trend towards a decrease in the standard deviation of body weight among female mice is the opposite of what has happened among humans in the same time frame. My findings are in stark contrast with Clementitis et al. 2010, which found that there was an 11.8% increase in body weight per decade from 1982 to 2003 in females coupled with a nearly two-fold increase in the odds of obesity. In males there was a 10.5% increase per decade.
