The usual story about the transition from Greek to Roman mathematics is that the Greeks were more theoretical and more philosophical inclined. But several Greek mathematicians actually operated within a Greco-Roman world, according to Professor John Boulden. The fact that we identified them with one tradition of mathematics is to some extent a reflection of the view that Cicero espouses which has become very very influential centuries after even down to our day.
