Psychologist Linda Buthroyd and Anthropologists in Nicaragua

Film and television are frequently blamed for shaping in an unhealthy way, people's images of themselves. Psychologist linda buthroyd found a chance to test the hypothesis by collaborating with anthropologists working in nicaraguin villages that are only just being connected to the grid. We know from laboratory experiments that we can manipulate the kind of body people think women should have, just through showing them lots of images. But what we found er in the work in nicaragua was that the actual differences in television access between people seemed to be associated with the same kind of differences in their ideas about body appearance.
