Lafayette and Jefferson had not seen each other since 1789, during the hopeful days after the fall of the Bastille. Levesure noted while Lafayette stayed with his Virginian friends he did not shy away from bringing up emancipation. "It appears to me that slavery cannot exist a long time in Virginia because all enlightened men condemn the principle of it," writes Levesure.
