The Power of Narrative Craft
When I was taught to write elegant code, I was taught that there were only two genders, male and female. And so this kind of mindset leads to making some default decisions that are not necessarily in harmony with the way that society operates now. Instead what we should be doing now is we should be making gender an editable field. We shouldn't represent it as a binary. We should represent it as text. Maybe there's a drop down. Maybe it's free text entry. There are politics to these kinds of seemingly mundane technical decisions.
