Did lincoln mean everything he said? This is a question that still engages historians, and one again that i discuss in a great deal of detail in the book, the broken constitution. I would say that on the whole, my answer is yes. What i do about slavery and the colored race, i do because i believe it helps to save the union. And if i could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, i would also do that.
