In many ways a depressing novel, especially the beginnings of it. The self centered narcissism and sinfulness of the characters is magnified. Christian mixed some really bad decisions she falls in love with a man who is distinctly unworthy of her affection and sleeps with him. So effectively you've contracted a marriage you either marry him or you stay single. And that's how how it was ruled. Of course, we think also Henry the eighth and his six wives.
