The Woodvilles, the Queen's family, had a meteoric rise when their daughter Elizabeth married Edward IV. They all knew well enough that if Richard had any real power, even temporarily, their stars would be falling. By making the coronation immediate, the Woodvilles were in effect dismissing Richard's position. The charge against him was "a little flimsy," says historian David Frum.
