The Importance of Light Cavalry in Napoleonic Warfare
Cossacks rode small, nimble horses and were used to fighting as individuals in loose formation. They also lost a lot of their effectiveness in mass charges. For the cavalryman, a charge was both exhilarating and terrifying. A charge could get going as fast as 14 miles an hour, or 22 and a half kilometers an hour.
