What Is Orthography?

The word orthography has been around in English since the 1400s. It ultimately comes from Greek, where it literally means correct writing or right writing. Ortho was apparently derived from an even older Indo-European root word that meant to grow properly. The idea of planting seeds and cultivating crops was extended to a new idea during the mid-1500s.
