Douglas Bader famously had no legs, but he became a Spitfire ace nonetheless. He lost one of his prosthetic legs in the course of being shot down. Lady Houston was sort of the reason that the Spitfire became the Spitfire during the war. She also was one of the richest women in the UK, if not the richest at one point.
