The Christian Warrior and the Warlord
The church had no option but to recognize their values. Plundering and tribute were the key means of achieving social and economic cohesion. Bishops in these regions were chosen from among warrior alites. They would appear as great noblemen, complete with private war bands. The result was christian holy war,. fighting the enemies of god, with a full papal guarantee that such violence was not only permissible, but redempt for the sincere knight of christ.
