"The industry is putting out a lot of these narratives that are very self-serving," he says. "We need to be concerned about the type of artificial general intelligence developing, so we don't do ourselves as a human species any harm." The idea that's being forwarded there is that the harms of AI are in the future, depending on how we develop this technology now and address them later.

Paris Marx is joined by Emily M. Bender to discuss what it means to say that ChatGPT is a “stochastic parrot,” why Elon Musk is calling to pause AI development, and how the tech industry uses language to trick us into buying its narratives about technology.
