Celibacy can be a tool in large, hierarchical organizations that exist in a dense social context of many dynasties competing. Monasteries are things that are secluded from the world, where they construct alternate communities and dedicate themselves to particular modes of life. It's essentially the case that, you know, instead of supporting their family, they support the monastery. And it's the monastery that then supports the continuation of the social technology.
