Is There a Role of Inflammation in Aging?

World class sprinters are probably at their best when they are 24, 25 or 26. At least olympic marathon runners can be competitive into their late thirties. Some older people over the age of 75 have circulating markers of inflammation. These inflammatory markers affect muscle in two ways. One is that they tend to reduce the rate of synthesis of new proteins. And so both of those things, in the inflamed state, can accelerate the loss of muscle. Bury old people, not so much.
