The Structure of the Book of Deuteronomy
The sermon on the mount begins with eight beatitudes, and these are mirrored on the other side of the book with eight woes that are given in chapter 23. This development from blessings that beginning to woes at the end is drawing upon patterns that we see in the old testament as well. A number of people have seen in matthew's five speeches a similarity with mose's five speeches in the book of deuteronomy. Matthew particularly foregrounds jesus teaching; Mark foregrounds acts of power,. luke, jesus travelling on omission and prophetic ministry.
