Franklin: Panpsychism is a view that you can have your cake and eat. It solves all these problems. But if it ends up revealing what we mean when we say someone's in pain such that the physicalism entails that no one feels pain, then that's anyway. The problem is to see how these extra properties of nature have any particularly to do with the mind. We evolved to find out about the properties that matter for survival. That leaves plenty of scope for properties we don't know about. So there's this close connection between consciousness and the role of mental states.
