Antonio Gramsci's notebooks were first translated into English in 1971. They had a big impact on the circle around the new left review, including Perry Anderson's 1976 mega essay, Antinomies of Antonio Gramsci. In places where there were important communist parties, Gramsci becomes a figure for a reformation inside the communist party. The US Communist Party is much less important politically on the left and has basically been so destroyed by the Cold War that Gramsci has little importance.
Featuring Michael Denning on Antonio Gramsci. The second of a two-part interview.
