Dexterity and Robotic Fingertips
One of the key challenges is robot sense of touch. We have mechanical receptors in our fingers that are able to give us information about pressure, texture, forces and we can do very complex dexterous tasks with that information. And robots don't have that analog yet. So my lab has developed a robotic finger tip called dense tack. It's an optical tactile sensor in the family of these types of sensors. With this input, we think that the machine learning models that plan how to do manipulation will be able to do far, far more with this interpretable intermediate modular output.
