A number of leading bioethicists made the case that this heavy handed totalitarian approach was justified. It may be it might have been justified had SARS-CoV-2 had a true morbidity and mortality akin to say Ebola. If we had had a respiratory Ebola back then the estimate was that there would be a billion people dead when that's with a B worldwide. And if that had been the case, I suspect that there people would have lined up for a partially effective vaccine that had significant toxicity.
