In 1878 Julius Velhausen published his influential Gesheestes Israels Band Eins. His book was a very influential argument for what is now known as the Documentary Hypothesis. The core of the Hebrew canon, the Pentateuch, is some kind of compilation of materials which have been cut and pasted together.
