There is no reason to believe that any tiv actually did practise cannibalism. The idea of eating human flesh appears to have disgusted and horrified them as much as it would most americans. Most appear to have been veritably obsessed by the suspicion that some of their neighbors, and particularly prominent men who became de facto political leaders, were secret cannibals. A witch would take a piece of the body of one of his own close relatives, whom he had murdered, and place it in the victim's food. And the society of whiches ensured that flesh debts were always paid.
