The S&P 500 and the Total Market Index
The S&P 500 represents 85% of the value of US public equities. If you look at the total market index, that value is about $40 trillion. The return since 1928 in these two indexes has been an advantage to the S&P500 by something over one tenth of one percent a year. But it's so close that I think we can, in fact, use either one of these as the benchmark.
