Herman and susy collier moved their family to an elegant row house at 20 78 fifth avenue on 120 eighth street in the neighborhood of harlem. Two major changes in new york city in the nineteenth cen helped to transform the former village of harlem into an urban residential neighborhood. Harlem is north of central park, but the city's sudden surge north led many to speculate that this former village would soon become desirable to upwardly mobile classes. By the late 18 seventies, elevated railroads brought more people into harlem, inspiring the development of single family row houses.
