In 1974, the Jackson's embarked on a trip to Senegal. The group did three shows there and appeared on the cover of Jet documenting their travels. According to Michael's school friend, Darrel Santola, that trip inspired Michael to become interested in African-American studies. At the same time as the Jackson's were distancing themselves from Motown, the record industry was getting wise to the selling power of black artists. That realization ushered in the end of the assembly line era at Motown.
