Historians have a number of first hand accounts about Marie Levo. Some of the most compelling recollections came from an informant named Marie De Day. Another informant, Charles Raphael also claimed to have seen Marie Levo's altar. The descriptions in A Night with the Voodoo's focused heavily on the distinctively African attributes of voodoo. But these remembrances describe a practice far more rooted in Catholicism and European magic.
