Sickle cell anemia is a blood disorder which causes some red blood cells to become misshapen, looking like crescent moons rather than full circles. The deformed cells can get stuck in small blood essels, blocking healthy blood cells from getting through and delivering oxygen. These blockages can cause severe pain for weeks on end. If only he could change the narrative around opioids and convince other doctors that the benefits outweigh the risks.
