The Evolution of Urbanization in Central Italy
There is no evidence for trade with the Aegean or the Levant anywhere in central Italy between about 1800 BC and 800 BC. The more sudden version of urbanization grew out of regional roots in Etruria, just as Latium's regional trajectory did. We must be looking at something that was happening within these communities and the broader regions of which they were apart. That process of competition drives state formation, gives elites more power and prestige, and leads to visible economic development.
