There's a wealth of science in an area called the science of a hormesis, which is Greek for to set in motion. It shows that by exposing an organism to mild to moderate toxic or noxious stimuli, you actually make the organism more resilient and healthier. Prayer, meditation, exercise, martial arts, other kinds of mind body work can up-regulate our own endogenous dopamine production.
