The most common mistake is that athletes will drop caloric intake. Don't restrict caloric intake for at least the first 72 hours after an injury. Think about food, the combination of protein, carbohydrates, fats and then micronutrients to actually be beneficial. If you're going into surgery, there's some really cool research to show carbohydrate loading going into surgery has benefits as well.
