The author was one of the very first women in her family to decide to put on the hijab. "I have a lot of questions around how we practice religion and religion," she says. Her parents were afraid for her safety after 9/11, when everyone thought there would be a third world war. She has mixed feelings about the hijab; at its best it's a sign of modesty but also humility.
