Both Democratic and Republican secretaries of state, the chief election officers, have called for the agency to be disbanded. They say it's too powerful because it's a turf war thing. One argument is accountability; if you don't like how the local registrar voters is running things, you can go complain to your county board as opposed to trying to complain to some federal agency far away. Another argument that has been made in favor of local control: If Trump were having some control over how a federal election was run, he could have tried to subvert the election in a national way.

We consider democracy a fundamental American value, but the reality is that we haven't been truly democratic for as long as our country has existed. Not only is the right to vote not constitutionally protected, but it also faces constant attacks from anti-democratic campaigns funded by billionaires, aiming to make voting more difficult.
