The Importance of Subtext in a Film
In a film or series, you're looking for that dialogue too and there's probably more things. What I suggest people do is set aside that notion of what a subtext is and think about subtext as an underlying action. This is how actors actually approach material. They don't want to tell them what they're feeling in the scene; they want to know what am I doing in the scene. The way to deal with that is through something called indirection or indirect speech. If you understand that On the Nose doesn't deal with subtext but it does with making the dialogue dynamic if you can get both sides talking at once.
