Caesar's Battle for Spain
The sons of Pompey were raising more legions in Hispania to challenge Caesar's rule. When word came that the ragtag remnants of the Senate's North African army was now thirteen legions strong, Caesar sent out with two veteran legions and marched to Spain. In the end he marshaled some forty thousand to face off against the seventy thousand raised by the Pompeys. But the speed of his advance had taken his enemies by surprise and Caesar was able to reclaim much of the territory taken by the Pompey brothers. The final numbers of 30,000 dead Pompeians, to a mere thousand for Caesar, hide how close Caesar came to losing everything.
