The Promised Land in Genesis
The plot of earth that's east of the mediterranean, west of the jordan and from dan in the north to beersheba in the south. The land functions here in the old testament as a symbol of of our flourishing in relationship to god. So now, the garden of eden another place, but its evocative of the life and fecundity and joy that comes from real friendship with god. Sin involves a loss of that place - so the promised land is the recovery of eden.
