Newborns need 14 to 17 hours of sleep a night. At four to 12 months, things come down with naps during the day and more consolidated sleep at night. Parents can start to see if their child is a long sleeper or short sleeper based on other children's sleeping habits. If they have strange erratic breathing you could well imagine why you'd be breathing out and saying, oh my goodness, like speed dial the pediatrician. More than likely that is going to be REM sleep. So just don't start dialing straight away would be the take home there.
