The Tokugawa shoguns patronized the major Buddhist sects. The policy of non-preference and support was so ingrained that the shogunate maintained two separate funerary temples for the Tokugawa family. As parishioners, they were expected to donate and regularly attend services,. providing, in essence, a captive audience for the temple.
