The Basics of a Particle Accelerator
The LHC uses an electric field to accelerate charged particles. Electric fields can tug on charged particles, which is essentially what they are. A cathode rate tube is basically using magnetism to move the electrons along. We don't have neutron accelerators or neutral atom accelerators because things have to have a charge in order for them to be accelerated.
