There's lots of elements in it that appeal the kind of harking back to a romantic ideal of a natural world of fairies, these sort of peaceful sprites. But not everyone was convinced. Some people said right away that Elsie and Francis had pulled one over on a lot of experts. One person wrote, knowing children and knowing that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has legs, I decide that they have pulled one of them.
