The most important things for a tornado to form are temperature, humidity, wind direction and speed. It's difficult to get this complete data set because tornadoes don't stay on the ground for long periods of time. I think as we get greater technology, in particular with drones, it will give us a greater capacity to collect these data sets without putting humans in harm's way.
2023 has been a record-setting year for tornadoes, and these storms came with barely any warning. So to better understand tornadoes, scientists might need to confront more of these storms head-on.
